Can You Solve the Rubik’s Cube in 9.13 Seconds?
Rowe Hessler can, and did, this past weekend in Atlanta at the U.S. National Rubik’s Cube Championship, setting a new U.S. “speed cubing” record.

During the first day of the event, 75 individuals attempted to set the Guinness World Record for the “Most Rubik’s Cubes Solved in One Hour in One Place.” Each participating was able to successfully solve the puzzle in the allotted one hour time period, and Guinness is preparing to validate the attempt.
The star of the event, which was co-sponsored by 360PR client Winning Moves Games, was Andrew Kang, an 18-year-old from Alpharetta, Georgia, who won the tournament with the best average solve time in the final round of the competition, held at the Underground Atlanta complex. His time of 12.97 seconds was better than the 100 other competitors who made the trip to Atlanta for their shot at the U.S. Rubik’s Cube title. The official results can be viewed here.
This was a made-for-TV event, with more than 100 stations across the US airing tournament footage. If you haven’t seen a speed-cuber in action, check out this video of Jason Baum, who I got to hang out with at Toy Fair earlier this year. As for me, I think it’s time to dust off my Cube and start twisting and turning. Who knows?

Truly amazing to watch these solve the cube so quickly – never mind the blindfolded competition! Good work John – great results!
